<p>Kismayo (RBC Radio) Somali Media Peace and Development (SOMPED) had said it was much worried about the case of a Somali journalist who was ordered by an Al Shabab court to leave from the port city of Kismayo within 36 hours on Monday.</p>
<p>Mohamed Salad Abdulle, a reporter with Bardhere based Markabley Radio and other Somali broadcasters, was detained in Kismayo on 15 March. Mohamed Salad was arrested by the Islamist group of Al Shabab allegedly he reported meeting between Al Shabab and Hisbul Islam, another rival Islamist group.</p>
<p>On Monday 22 March, the Al Shabab court in Kismayo released Mohamed Salad Abdulle but ordered to leave Kismayo within 36 hours, where he has long stationed.</p>
<p>“This is a kind of frightening act as Somali citizen in his born area to be expelled as a foreigner”, the chairman of SOMPED Media group, Farah Ahmed Atto said in a statement.</p>
<p>At the samed time an other journalist, Mohamed Abdulkarim, who also reports for Markabley Radio, was detained in Beled Hawo town.</p>
<p>Mohamed Abdulkarim was arrested by Al Shabab members after they alleged that he reported an interview with local elders that referred to the Somali government. But he was later released with a warning.</p>
<p>SOMPED media group welcomed the release of the reporter.</p>
<p>Since taking control of several regions in Somalia, Al Shabab has imposed hard and increasing restrictions on the local media causing many journalists to flee from the country.</p>

The Somali Media and Peace Developments (SOMPED) strongly condemns illegal arrest of Ali Yusuf Aden, Somali local reporter in Wanla-weyn district of Lower Shabelle region on Sunday 21st Februray 2010.<br />
 <br />
Ali Yusuf Aden was a private reporter for Somaliweyn radio based in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia.<br />
 <br />
The arrest of Ali Yusuf Aden is still unclear, but local residents and media group believe his arrest is tied with a report which Somaliweyn radio has broadcasted on Sunday.<br />
 <br />
&#8220;We can not justify what the arrest of Ali Yusuf Aden in linked to, but what we know is that his arrest came shortly after we released a news event about an old man who was killed by the Al Shabab militia in the town, the man was aacused of being late from the prayer&#8221;, one of Somaliweyn radio reporters told RBC Radio in a condition of anonymity.<br />
 <br />
Aburkar Hassan Kabar, Somaliweyn radio director in Mogadishu has said they are concerned about the detaintion of the journalist, while his family did not obtain a full details about his situation and where he is really detained.<br />
 <br />
Farah Ahmed Atto, the chairman of SOMPED told that there is no any report of where the reporter was detained.<br />
 <br />
&#8220;We are strongly codemning the arrest of Ali Yusuf Aden and we demand for his immediate release&#8221;, said SOMPED Chairman Farah Ahmed Atto. &#8220;This is a kind of harrasment that shows how dangerous the situation is for journalists in the country&#8221;, he added.<br />
 <br />
The chairman of SOMPED describes the arrest as a kind of pressure and silence to the local media in Somalia.<br />
 <br />
The Al Shabab officials in Wanla-weyn did not want to comment on the arrest of the journalist.<br />
 <br />
Al Shabab group, which is battling against the Somali government had forced journalists to stop reporting about their activities while banning local radio stations broadcasting music and songs which the group describes as illegal.<br />
 <br />
At least five radio stations in the south central Somalia had been forced to be off air since last four months.<br />

<div id="_mcePaste">
RBC Radio correspondent in the town, Awil Mahmoud says the wounded people include two local journalists while two of the stations attacked suffer heavy damage to their buildings.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">
The wounded journalists, Mohammed Isse Mahmoud and Abdulkadir Ali who were operating in Radio Voice of Mudug have been put in the hospital for treatment after they were injured on the attack which the assailants used hand grenades thrown to the inner side of their radio station which lies on the southern part of the town.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">
“unidentified assailants have thrown hand grenades to the three radio stations, which are Radio Galka’yo, Radio Voice of Mudug and Radio Hobyo within minutes”, Hassan Mohamed Jama (jidka), the director of Radio Galka’yo said.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">
“We could not understand why we have been targeted, we always report any event in the town or the whole country and we always keep to be impartial in our news reporting”, the director of Radio Galka’yo has added.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">
Liban Isse Omar, a local journalist operating in the Radio Voice of Mudug told RBC Radio that the attack was the first one which was targeted on three radio stations in the town at once and seems to be well coordinated.</div>

The Puntland and Galmudug administrations who dominate separately the northern and southern part of Galka’yo have said they were on investigation about this attack while still no one was arrested.</div>

<div id="_mcePaste">January, 07, 2010</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">The Media Association of Puntland (MAP) welcomes the decision by the Puntland Autonomous Government to release from custody Journalist Mohamed Yasin Isak, who was held in detention at the different offices of the Puntland Intelligence Services (PIS) in Bossasso, Garowe and Galkayo Mr Isak since 20th December 2009. He was released from PIS custody in Bosaso yesterday, 6th January 2009 after being held without judge for 17 days.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">Mr. Isak, a correspondent in Galkyo for the Voice of America Somalia section, was arrested after he reported on a crackdown by the government against the internally displaced people from Southern Somalia who the government of Puntland accuses of destabilizing Puntland and harboring the Al-shabab fighters. Mr.Isak interviewed members from internally displaced persons who were complaining the way government targeted them, which they said is collective punishment and they feel to be discriminated against the community they are living with.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">Government has not given any information as to why Journalist Mohamed was kept in detention for17days without trial but the high profile officers from PIS who don not want to be named told MAP the order of arrest was issued by the President of Puntland, Abdirahman Mohamed Mohamoud. Media Association of Puntland view his detention as part of the on-going campaign by the Puntland authority of silencing independent press as tribulation for their journalistic work.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">Mohmed Yasin Isak who recently recovered from a bullet wound after police man shot at Isak’s car at a checkpoint in front of the regional governor’s office in Galkayo town as one of the 15 bullets fired passed through his left shoulder on November 17, 2009. That the police officer who wounded the journalist has not been held accountable since now and continues his business as usual and this shows the extent of crime impunity that smashes up the rule of law and breaches constitutional protections for freedom of Expression and of the press.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">The journalist was a target for the government since August 2009. He was briefly arrested or suspended with some other journalists several times in Puntland.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">Media Association of Puntland demands the Puntland authority to stop all forms of intimidation against the journalists and media such as arbitrary detentions, suppression, harassment, censorship, and direct attacks by its police officers. Targeting the journalists due to telling the truth is a crime against the rights of journalists and the freedom of Press as basic right of all humans.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">We call the Puntland Government to respect and grantee the freedom of expression and of the press as demanded by the constitution.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">We demand the government to bring the perpetrators of violations against the journalists and the media to justice in order to end the crime impunity in Puntland and to prevent such cases from occurring in the future.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">Puntland authorities must ensure that journalists work in conditions of safety. We believe guaranteeing the safety of journalists is the foundation of assuring the security of Puntland and human rights of people in Puntland.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">The MAP salutes its campaigners in Puntland as well as all the local and international Press and rights groups for their invaluable efforts in helping the release of journalist Mohamed Yasin Isak.</div>

<div id="_mcePaste">
Mohamed Yasin who used to report from Galkaio in the Mudug region has been detained by Puntland’s Intelligence Service, known as PIS after they raided the house of Mr.Yasin in Galkaio on 21 Dec.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">
“We are strongly codemning the arrest of Mohammed Yasin Isaq and call for his immediate release”, said SOMPED Chairman Farah Ahmed Atto.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">
“SOMPED sees this arrest as a kind of pressure and silence to the free media in the country”, he added.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">SOMPED chairman also called for the Puntland officials to allow the local journalists and relatives visit and see the condition of Mohamed Yasin Isaq who is still in custoday.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">
Puntland security officials did not give any details about the arrest of the reporter and there are not any charges made against Mr.Yasin.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">
Puntland security forces have been targetting reporters operating in the region as growing insecurity conditions in the area which made local and international reporters not comment on the situation for the sake of fear. Military and police commanders of Puntland regularly go to the local radio stations who tell the reporters not air views and information which do not agree the way Puntland authorities want.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">
Last week, the director of Galkaio local radio, Hassan Mohammed Jama’ had escaped after he was shot by a Puntland police officer while Hassan Moamed Jama’ was at Galkaio main airport. Two bullets reportedly flew through the fabric of his pants, luckily Hassan Mohammed was unharmed.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">
SOMPED chairman is much concerned that the assailant was not arrested, but he is instead operating Puntland with apparent impunity.</div>

<div>The second annual Somali Youth Summit started today at the University of Minnesota Law School. The summit seeks to encourage and engage Somali youth in discussions about the future of their community.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">
The three-day summit brings together a number of Somali educators and young people from the United States, Canada and Europe to express their views about their country that has been engaged in a civil war for almost 20 years.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">
Abdisalam Aato, one of the founders of the Somali Youth Summit, said some of the Somali’s best and brightest young minds will gather and speak at the event to share their success stories to motivate and inspire fellow Somalis who are “holding the stick at the wrong end.”</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">
Mohamud Treek, another founder of the summit, said it is not associated with any organization, committee, or agency.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">
“Individuals from Somali online media [bartamaha.com] voluntarily stood up to create positive changes in the Somali youth community,” Treek said.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">
Aato said they received a great response after they held the first summit last year in Columbus, Ohio. The stories that many shared with the audience and the speeches delivered at the event were inspirational, he said.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">
“The first Summit has been a turning point for many young people in Ohio … who lost hope,” he said.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">Treek said he expects more participants this year because there is a larger Somali population in Minnesota than in Ohio.</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">
The event is sponsored by Cedar-Humphrey Action for Neighborhood Collaborative Engagement (CHANCE).</div>
<div id="_mcePaste">The summit starts today and will continue through Sunday.</div>
